Celebrate International Coffee Day

October 1 is the first official International Coffee Day. This has now been declared an annual event to celebrate coffee and it is observed in many countries all over the world. This is also used as a day to promote fair trade coffee to raise the awareness of the plight of the people that grow it.
Today, coffee is considered as one of the most consumed drinks in the world. Coffee lovers know everything there is to love about coffee and if you are one of them, you already know how great it is. Whether you just need a comforting treat, or a pick-me-up at any time of the day, coffee is your drink of choice. There are many reasons why coffee is a great drink, even including health related reasons!
Currently, approximately 1.7 billion cups of coffee are sold each year in the UK from more than 18,000 outlets. The numbers may seem large but compared to the rest of Europe, this is small beans! In the UK people consume an average of 2.8kgs of coffee each year but this is far less than the 12.2kgs per capita in Finland!
This year, with more and more coffee outlets starting up each week, the average spend in a coffee shop continues to rise and consumers are also  visiting coffee shops more frequently too. Five years ago only one in nine people visited a coffee shop daily, that has now risen to one in five.
World coffee statistics – July 2015*:
·        World coffee exports totalled 9.59 million bags in July
·        Arabica exports totalled 68.29 million bags in the 12 months up to the end of July
·        Robusta exports totalled 43.31 million bags in the 12 months up to the end of July
Please celebrate the coffee industry’s diversity, quality and passion and enjoy an extra cup of espresso today!

Drinking your Espresso: It’s all in the timing!

Coffee lovers all over the world have been drinking more and more cups of coffee in a day. However, there are still many who feel that the first espresso of the day is no longer as effective and is not giving you the expected boost of energy. In a recent research, we find the reason for this.
According to ASAP Science, drinking coffee first thing in the morning may not be the best way to take advantage of the energy boost in caffeine.
This is because it is in the morning that we have high levels of cortisol and when you consume coffee at this time of the day, it could produce problems. One is that it could interfere with the body’s production of cortisol. This hormone is responsible for improving glucose levels in our blood and as a response to stress. As a result of caffeine intake, the production of cortisol is impeded and this will let us rely on the coffee boost to compensate.
The second problem is something that many coffee drinkers have experienced and this is the increase in tolerance to caffeine by habitual morning drinkers. This happens due to the face that it replaces the natural cortisol-induced boost instead of adding it.
Cortisol levels have been found to be generally high at three times during the day, not just early morning, so the best times to drink coffee or caffeine are between 10.00am and Midday and between 2.00pm and 5.00pm.
Basically the study is saying that the best time to drink coffee is when our brains can use the caffeine most efficiently, and that’s not first thing in the morning if you need a caffeine boost. It may therefore be a good idea for early morning coffee drinkers to consider adjusting their schedules to better optimise their caffeine intake.

Of course we love making and enjoy drinking espressos at all times of the day and are not saying to stop that morning fix! It is just that over time you may find that you need more and more coffee for the same effect.

Espresso: The Healthy Coffee

Through the years, people have always been drinking coffee and then debating whether it is good or bad for the health. In a recent report by an advisory committee in the US government, it was mentioned that caffeine is recommended in the diet. Unlike other studies and reports that suggested the elimination of caffeine from the diet, this report says that Americans can safely consume up to five cups a day or approximately 400 mg of caffeine without any detrimental effects to health.
This is definitely great news for coffee lovers and the coffee industry. In the UK, about 1.7 billion cups of coffee are served each year, from more than 18,000 outlets. This excludes the number of coffee cups being drunk at home; and there are sure to be a lot of coffee being drunk at home.
Most people did not start drinking coffee because of health benefits; many probably thought that it was not good to drink coffee at all! So if you are a normal coffee lover, you will be happy to know that coffee is considered to be officially good for the body!
Out of the many researches done it’s becoming more and more clear that the most benefitting coffee is black, pure and organic coffee. Through the years, coffee drinking has been associated with a lot of health benefits such as decreasing the risks of suffering from type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. This can be achieved through drinking organic espressos, considered as the healthiest coffee.
For many people today coffee has become synonymous with heavily sweetened caramel, chocolate or vanilla flavoured beverages. But by dousing your coffee in milk, cream, sugar and flavourings, you are missing out on the therapeutic benefits of the natural blend of polyphenol antioxidants, which are part of what makes coffee so healthy. Research has shown that adding dairy products to coffee may interfere with the body’s absorption of beneficial chlorogenic acids and adding sugar will spike insulin levels.
Drinking coffee black without sugar, cream, milk or flavourings will ensure it’s the healthiest it can be. But for people who really can’t drink it black then they can add a non-dairy alternative such as coconut milk or a natural sweetener. Also, drinking organic coffee whenever possible will add to the positive health effects, as the beans will be free of pesticides and other chemicals that may destroy them.

The healthiest coffee is an espresso.

The healthiest coffee is an Espresso

A recent dietary report produced by a government advisory committee in the US has for the first time mentioned caffeine as a dietary recommendation. Rather than suggesting that caffeine should be eliminated altogether, it stated that Americans could safely consume up to five cups a day or approximately 400 milligrams of caffeinewith no detrimental effects.
This is great news for the coffee industry and a definite sign of the times as coffee shops and coffee chains grow year on year. In the UK there are now more than 18,000 outlets which serve about 1.7bn cups of coffee each year, and of course there are many many cups drunk at home too. Most coffee drinkers however, did not start drinking coffee because they thought that it was good for their health, but in fact many probably thought that it probably was not. So if you are a regular coffee drinker like so many of us are, then you are now in for a pleasant surprise as it turns out that coffee may officially be good for you after all!
The more research that comes out the more it becomes clear that coffee in its organic, black, purest form is a beverage you can enjoy while also benefitting your health. Over the years it has been associated with lowering the risks of suffering from a stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and now the general consensus is that drinking organic espressos – the healthiest coffee – is the best option.
